The Five-Step Review Process
Every HearingExperts review follows the same five-step process. We document this publicly so you can see exactly how our rankings are produced — and so we hold ourselves accountable.
Category Selection
We choose hearing aid categories based on what older adults and their families actually search for and ask about. We don't write reviews for categories where we can't gather real-world testing data, and we don't accept brand-suggested topics.
Shortlisting
We identify the top 8–15 candidate devices in each category using:
- Verified wearer reviews from major retailers and dedicated hearing aid forums (minimum 100 reviews per product)
- Audiologist recommendations and peer-reviewed clinical literature where applicable
- Independent FDA clearance and safety data, including OTC hearing aid regulatory filings
- Input from our audiology editor and hearing instrument specialist panel
From this list, we narrow to the final 5–7 devices that will be tested and scored.
Hands-On Testing
We purchase or receive review samples of every device (always disclosed). Our testing panel — 25+ adult wearers across a range of hearing loss levels and lifestyles, plus our in-house audiology team — uses each device over a defined period (typically 4–8 weeks per category).
For all health-related categories, our Lead Audiology Editor reviews testing protocols before evaluation begins and validates any claims against current audiological standards.
Data Synthesis & Scoring
We score every device against the same criteria using a standardized scoring rubric (see below). Scores are computed before rankings are assembled — we don't decide a "winner" first and reverse-engineer the score.
Editorial Review & Publication
Every review is checked by our Lead Audiology Editor before publication. Reviews are then updated monthly, or sooner if significant new data emerges — such as firmware changes, FDA notices, pricing shifts, or wearer safety reports.
Our Scoring Criteria
Each hearing aid receives an overall score out of 10, calculated from weighted sub-scores. Weights are set per category — for example, "battery life" carries more weight for rechargeable picks, while "discretion" counts more heavily in our invisible-fit category.
| Criterion | What We Measure | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Sound Quality | Speech clarity in quiet and noisy environments, feedback management, and natural tone reproduction | 30% |
| Comfort & Fit | Physical comfort over a full day's wear, secure fit across common ear shapes, and ease of insertion and removal | 25% |
| Ease of Use | Controls, app interface, pairing simplicity, and overall accessibility for first-time wearers | 20% |
| Value | Cost relative to performance, included accessories, warranty length, and trial or return policy | 15% |
| After-Sale Support | Follow-up care options, customer service quality, availability of local or telehealth fitting support | 10% |
Why This Matters
Most "best of" lists you find online are ranked by affiliate commission rates. Brands that pay higher commissions get listed first. We refuse to do that. HearingExperts's rankings are determined exclusively by our scoring rubric, applied identically to every device — paid or unpaid, well-known or niche.
What We Don't Do
To keep our reviews trustworthy, there are several things we explicitly don't do:
- We don't accept payment for placement. No brand can pay to be ranked higher.
- We don't write reviews based on press releases. Every review requires hands-on testing with real wearers.
- We don't hide negative findings. If a device underperforms or causes discomfort, we say so — even if we've previously praised the manufacturer.
- We don't rely on a single data source. Every score combines hands-on testing, audiologist review, and verified wearer feedback.
- We don't make medical claims without audiological oversight. All hearing health content is reviewed by our licensed Au.D. before publication.
How We Update Reviews
Hearing aids change. Firmware updates alter performance, prices shift, new clinical data emerges, and brands revise their support offerings. We update every published review on at least a monthly basis, and immediately when:
- A device receives an FDA safety notice or is recalled
- A firmware or hardware revision materially changes performance
- Significant new clinical or safety data emerges
- Pricing shifts by more than 20% or trial/warranty terms change
Updated reviews always show the most recent revision date at the top of the article.
